A volunteer education and solidarity initiative

Volunteer teacher guide

What you need to know, from filling in your profile to your first lesson and your certificate.

Before you start

  • Choose your subjects, grades and teaching languages carefully. Don’t list a subject you don’t know well.
  • On the weekly grid, mark only the times you are really free.
  • Upload your diploma or teaching document. Once it is checked, your profile shows it and you can open a group class.
  • We recommend turning on the second sign-in step under “Sign-in security” in your account.

When you accept a request

  1. Before accepting, look at the grade, subject and times. If you don’t have time, don’t accept: the request will be shown to another teacher.
  2. After accepting, suggest a lesson time. When the parent confirms, the lesson goes into the calendar and a reminder arrives the day before.
  3. Write to the parent through the messages on the lesson page. Do not write to the child directly.

During the lesson

  • Join the video lesson with the button on the lesson page. You are the only host in the room.
  • Ask the parent to be present in the first lessons.
  • Never ask a child for their address, photos, phone number or other personal details. Do not record the lesson.

After the lesson

  • Mark the lesson as held and write the topic, homework and a short note. The parent sees these in the progress report.
  • Set homework and short quizzes if you like. Answers are collected on the lesson page.
  • The hours of the lessons you hold are added up in your volunteer certificate, which you can print or save as a PDF from your account.

Opening a group class

  • If your document has been checked, an “Open a class” link appears in your account. A class can have up to 10 students.
  • The class appears in the public list after a coordinator approves it. You accept requests yourself and, if needed, remove a child with a reason.
  • After each lesson, mark attendance: parents see how many lessons their child attended in the report.

If something worries you

If you are worried about a child’s safety, use the “Report a concern” link on the lesson page. If there is immediate danger, call 112 straight away.
