A volunteer education and solidarity initiative

Frequently asked questions

If you can’t find your question here, write to us.

General

What is ELMYOLU?

An independent education initiative started by volunteers. It introduces children to teachers who teach for free, and connects families with people who want to help with books and devices.

Does it cost anything?

No. Nobody pays for lessons or for help.

Are you part of an organisation?

No. We are not tied to any party, organisation or movement.

Parents

Who can apply?

For a child under 18, a parent or legal guardian sends the request. If you are 18 or over, you can apply yourself.

Which subjects are there?

12 subjects, from mathematics to digital skills. You can see which subjects have a teacher right now on the Teachers page.

When will I hear back?

It depends on when a suitable teacher is free. You can see the status of your request in your account.

Do I need to be there during lessons?

It is not required, but we recommend staying with your child, especially in the first lessons.

Volunteer teachers

Who can teach?

Anyone over 18 who knows their subject and follows the community guidelines.

Do I need a diploma?

No. A coordinator checks your profile. If you upload your diploma and it is checked, your profile shows this. To open a group class, your document must have been checked.

How much time do I need to give?

You decide. One lesson a week is enough.

Help and privacy

Is money collected on the support portal?

No. Help is given as books, supplies, devices or time, directly between the people involved.

Who can see my phone number?

Only the other person, and only after you agree. A child’s name is never shown publicly.

How do I delete my data?

Under “Delete account” in your account. You can also download your data as a file there.

Group classes, messages and video

How many children are in a group class?

Up to 10. The teacher accepts requests; if the class is full, the request goes on the waiting list.

Do children see each other in a group lesson?

Yes. In a video lesson the children see each other’s faces and first names. Parents’ contact details are never shown to anyone.

How do I write to the teacher?

Once the teacher accepts your request, a “Message the teacher” button appears on the lesson or class page. Only you and the teacher can see the conversation.

Does the ELMYOLU team read my messages?

No. A conversation can be opened only to look into a complaint about it, and every opening is recorded.

Are lessons recorded?

No. Video lessons are not recorded, and participants are not allowed to record them either.
