Why we started
Each of us knows children who want to learn but cannot find a teacher, have no books or computer, or have fallen behind for some reason. We did not want to just watch.
Each of us had a subject we knew and a few hours to give. We thought that if we put them together, at least a few children would not have their learning cut short. That is how ELMYOLU began.
We are not tied to any party, organisation or movement. Our only aim is that children keep learning.
What we do
A parent asks for lessons for their child, and we show them volunteer teachers who fit. Lessons take place online or in person, at a time the teacher and the family choose together. A teacher can also open a group class for up to 10 students.
Other people do not want to stand by either. On the support portal they read what families need and help directly with books, a computer, school supplies or their time. We do not collect money.
How we work
A coordinator checks teacher profiles and group classes, children’s details are never shown publicly, and contact details are shared only when both sides agree.
Complaints are reviewed by volunteer moderators, including lawyers and child-protection specialists. We describe what we do and how in our Privacy and Terms pages.
